How Often Should I Attend Education as a Hairstylist?

05.12.2017

We all know that education is a vital part of being a hairdresser, but how often should you attend education classes? We’re breaking down the importance of education, why you need a refresher, what education does for stylists and salons, and our recommendations on how often you should attend classes.

We love providing this experience for our clients and look forward to contributing to their growth in the industry!

How Often Should I Attend Education?

Take it from Jessica Ortega, Moroccanoil Regional Education Manager for North America: “A good rule of thumb would be to get educated monthly, even if it’s just a monthly in-house training with your own salon team, with the simple goal of team building and experience.

A key phrase that sticks with me is, ‘Never stop learning.’ Regardless of your ‘level’ in the industry, technology, tools, and products are always evolving and you never really ‘know everything.’ A veteran stylist may be too complacent in what they know to effectively cater to their clientele. How can they reignite their passion to keep that spark alive about their craft? The answer is simple…EDUCATION.”

What Classes Should I Take?

“I would challenge stylists to attend classes in topics they are not comfortable with. For example, if you're the stylist that tells the receptionist, ‘If an updo calls, don't book with me,’ recognize the opportunity for growth in yourself and find an upstyling class,” said Ortega.

How Does Education Help Me in My Day-to-Day Job?

“It would kill me to have a loyal longtime client who sees me for their hair color need to seek an alternative stylist for their wedding day updo! If you want to make hairdressing your long-term career, you need to be well-rounded. The more well-rounded you are, the more value and knowledge you can offer clients,” said Ortega.

Education is not only essential for each and every hairdresser no matter how ‘long they've been licensed,’ but also necessary to influence their passion in why they chose to be a stylist in the first place.”

What Classes Does Salon Services Offer?

“We have a variety of education available at Salon Services ranging from product knowledge demonstrations to hands-on workshops, to business building seminars. Our goal is to elevate our stylists and ignite their passion and confidence in their craft through education,” said Lauren Baumann, Education and Marketing Manager for Salon Services.

How Do Hands-On Classes Compare to Online Education?

“In this new era driven by technology and instant, on-demand information, the experience of learning is changing. Our clients are finding new inspiration from Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube, but the experience of interacting with an expert, getting your hands in the product, receiving direct feedback, and learning and sharing your passion with others is something that you can only truly experience if you invest your time and participate in hands-on education,” Baumann said.

Inspiration is only a class away. Learn new techniques, make meaningful connections with other stylists, and keep your hairdressing up-to-date with education at Salon Services.
