Holiday & Merchandising Ideas

Resources for Holiday Retailing, Merchandising & Planning

MAKE YOUR OWN NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION

Think about your own career and where you want to take it.
Get inspired by taking classes to learn new skills, attending hair shows and trade shows to further your knowledge. Never stay stagnant, and if you’re interested and passionate about a certain product line, consider looking for opportunities to become a brand educator. Sharing your knowledge with others can be the best way to keep your in passion burning while advancing your career and building your resume in the process.

Be the best at customer service.
New year, new clients – turn up the charm a little! Offer them a beverage before you get going, spend a little longer massaging their head during their shampoo – it’s the little things you do for your clients that can make the biggest difference.

Be philanthropic.
Supporting charitable causes seems to reach a fever pitch during the holiday season, then tends to drop off as the new year begins. People in need still need winter coats in January – launch a coat drive, offering people to trade used coats for sample-sized products. Incidentally trades like this can be a good way to clear out leftover holiday merchandise you’ve broken down.

New Year, new you.
If you’re reading this, chances are you’re a creative, ever-changing artist anyway, so this suggestion might be redundant: Change your image. It’s a new year and your clients are looking for all things fresh. Be their new year-new style ambassador. Punk geometric cut? Frizzed out Rapunzel extensions? Glossy red highlights? Your clients will feel more comfortable asking for your advice about how they can change their look once they’ve seen you successfully change up yours.

That being said, take time to consult with your clients on their first visit of the new year. Even if they come in wanting “just the usual,” it’ll make them feel appreciated that you take the extra time to really make sure you’re giving them what they want. And if they do take you up on your offer to discuss possible changes to their look, indulge them. Don’t rush them and make sure you’re both on the same page.

DON’T FORGET THE MERCHANDISING

Give people some time to get over the exhausting of the winter holidays before bringing out any Valentine’s décor, but do consider bringing some out. The Valentine’s Day season can be a great way to keep the retail train rolling after the holiday season. This would also be a good time to bring some of your non-holiday-specific gift packages back to the shelves – Kevin.Murphy, Brocato and Dermalogica all came in holiday-neutral packaging this season, so you should be able to sell as Valentine’s gift for all those special someones.

SALON SERVICES HEARTS VALENTINE’S DAY: SOME OF OUR FAVORITE LOVE QUOTES

“When love is not madness, it is not love.” ~Spanish playwright Pedro Calderon de la Barca

I don't understand why Cupid was chosen to represent Valentine's Day.  When I think about romance, the last thing on my mind is a short, chubby toddler coming at me with a weapon.  ~Author Unknown

Love is a symbol of eternity.  It wipes out all sense of time, destroying all memory of a beginning and all fear of an end.  ~Author Unknown

Trip over love, you can get up.  Fall in love and you fall forever.  ~Author Unknown

Anyone can catch your eye, but it takes someone special to catch your heart.  ~Author Unknown
Who, being loved, is poor?  ~Oscar Wilde
