WA State - Reseller Permit Requirement

Washington State passed a law that went into effect January 1, 2010, governing the possible exemption from sales tax collection for your purchases.

Under current Washington law, if you have a Reseller Certificate with a State-issued 9 digit UBI (Unified Business Identifier) Number you have been able to obtain an exemption from paying sales tax on purchases for resale to your customers when you present a copy of this certificate to the seller.

Starting January 1, 2010, you will only be able to receive this sales tax exemption from the seller if you have the new State-issued Reseller Permit with Permit Number (a new 9 character code typically starting with a letter followed by 8 numbers).  By law (and subject to fines and penalties), no seller will be allowed to provide the buyer with a sales tax exemption if they do not have a physical copy of your new Reseller Permit on file – regardless of whether or not they previously had your Reseller Certificate and UBI number.

As a service to our State of Washington customers, we are providing this reminder so you can obtain your new Reseller Permit from the State (if you haven’t already done so) and forward a copy of it to the attention of our Accounting Department at the address below. We encourage you to take care of this as soon as possible to avoid any sales tax concerns starting the first of New Year. (Permits are already being issued by the State, so it’s not too early to follow-up on this new requirement.)

We are not able to provide you with any specific tax information, but you can read about this new requirement on the State of Washington, Department of Revenue website at www.dor.wa.gov under the section entitled “New Laws.”
