| The History of Marcia Teixeira Keratin Treatment |
Keratin smoothing systems first emerged in rural Brazil in the late 1990's, when it was discovered that certain preservatives could actually bond keratin proteins to the hair. This procedure resulted in amazingly straight, smooth results that lasted for several months. The treatment eventually garnered interest from several Brazilian cosmetics companies who began to develop and market their own versions of the treatment. One of these lines, Marcia Teixeira Keratin Treatment, was the first of its kind introduced into the United States - and is one of the number one smoothing brands in the world. This brand is produced by Marcia and Marcelo Teixeira's company, M&M International, Incorporated. Marcia herself first encountered these treatments while traveling in Brazil, and after a lifetime of struggling with harsh chemicals to tame her own curls, she decided to develop her own proprietary formula. Marcia spent several years studying and working with experts and chemists to develop the perfect formula, which is both safe and highly effective. | Science, Controversy and Formalin |
| Keratin smoothing treatments are not only one of the fastest-growing salon services in the United States - they are also the subject of much controversy, misinformation and even fear. Rumors fly about formulas containing formaldehyde, and formulas that are supposedly formaldehyde free. The truth of the matter is that formaldehyde is a gas, not a liquid, thus cannot be an ingredient in a wet product. The confusion comes from the chemical product that is used in most Brazilian Keratin Treatments, which is known as formalin - and has an entirely different chemical structure. Formalin is the preservative product that is used to bind the natural keratin into the hair shafts. However, when heated to high temperatures, as with flat irons, formalin can transform into a small amount of formaldehyde gas. The amount of gas created depends on the formulation of each individual brand. There are some products that claim to be "formaldehyde free," which either don't last as long, or contain another chemical that has nearly the same properties as the formalin. Formulas with active ingredients molecularly similar to formalin will emit the same amount of formaldehyde gas when heated at high temperature. |
