Tips and Trends from Salon Services

Off with a BANG
Rick Kornbluth, President and CEO of Cutter and Stiles (an umbrella company that also includes Kevin Murphy), announces the launch of Bangstyle.com, a new, hip website to introduce stylists around the country to the Bangstyle movement. Designed to be fresh, happening and independent, Bangstyle will incorporate imagery and news from the worlds of Indie, art, music, film and photography- topics of interest to many stylists. Intended to create awareness and a demand for the brand, the site is launching approximately nine months in advance of the Bangstyle line of professional beauty products. “This brand will be bigger than the 12 products, it will be a lifestyle,” announced Nelson. www.salontoday.com

How Nordstrom Built a Legacy Based on Customer Service
Earlier this year, Nordstrom opened the 43rd new department store to launch since the founding family took back control of the company in 2000, building on customer-service legacy that helped the luxury chain boost its market share as other upscale department stores saw sales slide during the downturn. "Nordstrom's claim to fame has been customer service. They led the charge and to some extent invented [the concept]," said Jones New York President Richard Dickson. www.sfgate.com

What Effect does a Summer Swim Have on Your Skin?
As the temperatures rise in the northern hemisphere, off we head, swimsuit (& hopefully sunscreen) in hand, to the closest beach, pool or lake we can find. No harm in a quick dip right? Well, not exactly! Heather Hickman of the International Dermal Institute discusses how the skin interacts with our summer swim trips and how we can take proactive steps to keep our skin healthy and hydrated all season long. www.dermalinstitute.com

New Consumer Study Finds that Both French and American Women
Lie About their Beauty Habits

Have you ever thought about how much you lie about things, and lie about your beauty habits in particular? (Me, fake bake? No way! I was totally out in the sun all day yesterday!) To further promote the mascara, Benefit commissioned a consumer study of French and American women to determine how much they lie about makeup. They surveyed 300 women in each country between the ages of 18 and 54. The results are fascinating. www.fashionista.com

Social Media Marketing by the Numbers
Coca-Cola really got 86.5 million impressions for a Promoted Trend on Twitter? Twelve million people really tuned in to watch a man put an iPad into a blender? The numbers just tell part of the story, but as they say, you can't argue with the numbers. You can only take issue with how "great" they are. www.mashable.com

My Body Gallery: Finally See Other Women Who Are Your Size
Have you ever tried to size up other women and determine if they wear the same size as you? Or if their bodies look the same as you? Many of us do this subconsciously and it doesn't have to be a negative thing. This morning we discovered a new site called My Body Gallery that promotes a positive body image and we're kind of obsessed. "In a world full of images of how we 'should' look it can get difficult to tell how we DO look," the site says. "Most women have spent so many years looking at themselves in mirrors that we can no longer see what's really there. The My Body Gallery project's goal is to help women objectively see what we look like and come to some acceptance that we are all beautiful." www.thefrisky.com
