January’s Featured Salon: Urbanna Natural Spa & Salon

Staying focused on the environment, sustainable resources and using/retailing natural, earth-conscious brands, Urbanna Natural Spa & Salon has become the first Davines MultiSpace salon in the Spokane area. This month we spoke to Urbanna owner, Linda Biel, about opening her first salon and her desire to keep it green.

What makes Urbanna unique?

For us, because we’re a salon and spa, there really isn’t anything else like us in the area. Except for the one at the Davenport – and that’s really something entirely different. [Davenport is a historic hotel with a conservative salon/spa in the lobby.]

Since we’re a little more on the total side, you can have multiple things taken care of here, so it’s really convenient. You can get your hair, manicure, pedicure and facial without running all over town.

You guys JUST opened. How has it been going?

It’s been hectic that we opened right before the holidays, so there was a lot of crazy running around, decorating! It was really super fun, but now that it’s January I wish we could have Christmas back!

How are you getting the word out about your salon?

We just partnered with Starbucks (we haven’t worked out all the details) so we might be selling some of their teas and helping each other. We do a lot of grassroots marketing, passing out cards, promos. We’re up on Facebook and Twitter.

You’re the first Davines MultiSpace salon in Spokane; did you know you wanted to go with Davines when you started? Or did it just come along at the right time?

It’s actually kind of interesting, because most of my staff comes from Aveda, but I wanted something different. I wanted to find something that was aromatic, eco friendly and that had a lot of different options in the shampoos, conditioners, and the styling aids. Plus simple, nice

packaging. I love it.

During my search for the perfect product line, Christy Hawkins [SSS Downtown Spokane Sales Consultant] showed up and was amazing! She hit every single thing that I was looking for! Several others approached me but nothing hit my expectation like Davines.

How did you settle on your salon’s location?
It’s really quite a spectacular location – Urbanna is in the directly in the middle of Spokane. If you pointed to the middle of Spokane on a map, you’d be pointing to Urbanna.  We’re right off the freeway, convenient to all the hospitals and downtown… plus we have free parking – unheard of in downtown Spokane!

Your website mentions you have an interactive “color kitchen,” where clients can watch you mix the colors. I’ve never heard of anything like it, do clients love it?

We’re trying to get them out of their chair to come see!  There’s this mentality in salons that once you’re in your seat you don’t get up! People love to see it for the first time, though: It’ll catch on eventually.

You offer nails, hair, skin treatments, everything! What’s your most signature service?

My signature facial is the tropical elements – plants from the tropics, nice aroma, gentle peel it’s really nice and relaxing.

Urbanna is Green Certified. What does the process of being Green Certified entail?

It’s a matter of purchasing all furniture and fixtures that are made from all natural materials, (wood and leather) that use no toxic glues and that are sustainable.

We do everything we can to reduce our impact. All of our treatment rooms have fans so in the summertime we push the air around and reduce air conditioning use to naturally cool. We also have fixtures from Freestyle Systems, with suspended hair dryers and four LCD lights over every station.

It also helps us select the products we use: Organic and natural products: Davines so far, but we’re looking at picking up other products that are organic and sustainable.

Are there a lot of other salons in the area that are green certified?
There are actually more and more salons starting that movement. It’s really not a trend – it’s necessary.

Why be green?

We don’t want to start an ice age tomorrow! As you know we’re rapidly seeing an extreme climate change and we need to level that out so the extreme doesn’t happen.

What else do you do in your personal life to stay green?
I drink a lot of tap, not bottled water, and am conscious of what I do every day. Recycling, reusing the other side of paper when I print. Just being aware of the decision not to waste.
