Decorating on the Cheap!
Pulling together a holiday look for your salon that is both purchase-inducing and good cheer-generating doesn’t have to break the bank – it doesn’t even have to break the piggy bank!
A consumer survey from 2006 estimated that Americans spend a total of $16 billion (yes, 16 BILLION) on holiday decorations each year; roughly a quarter of which were spent on the winter holidays. These outrageously high outputs of cash mean one thing, though: there's plenty of good holiday décor to be had on a second hand basis...
Goodwill, Value Village, charity thrift stores are all great places to pick up props to help you stage holiday merchandising and pump up good cheer around the salon for just a few bucks. You'll probably find that most items were only used for a season or two and then passed on. Seriously, how could you pass up a holiday wreath for under $5? A faux tree for $15? A grab bag of silver snowflake ornaments for $3? All three examples were spotted this past weekend. And since everything’s so inexpensive, you won’t feel bad about re-donating it after the holidays and doing the same thing next year! Not into thrift store goods? Try these ideas that use items that are inexpensive and can be modified for future use! · A bowl of fruit (lemons, pomegranates, tangerines and cranberries) add color to shelves or countertop. · Impulse items, such as candles, small hair products, nail polishes and jewelry can create a beautiful merchandising display – or hang as ornaments on your holiday tree (if you choose to have one). · Consider a “Mitten Tree” decorated with client-donated mittens, scarves and hats to be given to local community service organizations. · Wrap empty boxes with holiday wrap and festoon with bows recycled from previous years.
· Display a potted rosemary tree or mini-evergreen, often found at grocery stores during the holidays. Once the New Year comes, plant outside.
